To the Kid with the Book
03/25/2011 10:20 pm by finderAre you the kid with the book?
I am. When I was growing up, I kept books with me everywhere. I squirreled them away in the car-door pockets and between couch cushions and behind the shampoo in the tub. I got in trouble for sneaking paperbacks into class or to the dinner table. When, years later, my partner and I moved cross-country, we got rid of furniture, clothing, and tchotchkes, and still had to rent a van because we had more books than would fit in our compact car.
If you’re nodding to yourself as you read this, you will know what I mean when I say that books are my totems.
Talisman, the third story arc of Finder Vol. 1, is dedicated to “the kid with the book; everywhere.” It’s a book about a book—and it touches on the same totemic power of books, of the physicality of books, that I perpetually struggle to articulate. If, like me, you’re the kid with the book, you’ll recognize yourself in its chapters and its main character, see your passions reflected in its paper mirror.
This one’s for us.
